ABC Club

The Friends of the ABC was an association of Republicans in Victor Hugo's Les Misérables. Their objective was to relieve the condition of the suppressed, or abaissé, pronounced similarly in French to "A-B-C".[1] On 5 June 1832, they broke out into an insurrection, the so-called June Rebellion, which was suppressed with bloodshed after Paris had been put into a state of siege on 6 June.[2]
